HVAC Installation Best Practices

  • Minimum airflow velocity criteria (min. 1.5 to 2.5 m/s across element face)
  • Step-by-step mechanical duct insertion, gasketing, and orientation
  • Wiring differential pressure airflow interlocks and dual thermal cutouts
  • SCR thyristor proportional modulation vs. multistage contactors

What is an Electric HVAC Duct Heater?

An electric HVAC duct heater is an open-coil or finned-tubular heating assembly installed inside air handling ducts to provide primary space heating, comfort reheating, or freeze protection. It operates with airflow interlocks and SCR thyristor controllers to deliver precise, uniform air temperature across commercial and industrial ventilation systems.

Step-by-Step HVAC Duct Heater Installation Guide

  1. Step 1: Check Duct Dimensions & Airflow Velocity Profile — Verify the duct interior matches heater frame dimensions. Ensure uniform airflow distribution across the face with minimum air velocity of 2.0 m/s (400 FPM) to avoid localized overheating.
  2. Step 2: Maintain Required Clearances — Provide at least 1.2 meters (4 feet) of straight duct run upstream and downstream from elbows, transitions, and fan discharge outlets to ensure non-turbulent airflow.
  3. Step 3: Mechanical Insertion & High-Temperature Gasketing — Mount the heater frame securely into the duct opening using high-temperature silicone or ceramic fiber gaskets to prevent warm air leakage and acoustic vibration.
  4. Step 4: Wire Airflow Interlock Switch (Mandatory Safety) — Install a differential pressure switch or sail switch in series with the heater control circuit so power is cut immediately if the fan trips.
  5. Step 5: Connect Dual Over-Temperature Limiters — Wire an automatic reset thermal cutout set to 45°C–50°C and a manual reset secondary cutout set to 80°C in series with the main contactor coil.
  6. Step 6: Pre-Power Megger Testing & Commissioning — Perform a 1000V insulation resistance check (minimum 50 MΩ) on all heating circuits before energizing the master circuit breaker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What causes duct heating elements to burn out quickly?
A: The most common failure cause is inadequate airflow velocity or stagnant air pockets created by abrupt duct transitions directly before the heater bank.

Q: Can duct heaters be controlled via building automation systems (BMS)?
A: Yes, our duct heater control panels support 0–10VDC or 4–20mA analog inputs from BMS controllers for seamless solid-state SCR thyristor power modulation.
